What We Do

One of the many benefits of membership in the HSC is access to the wide variety of exciting and vibrant programs, trips, book groups and other activities scheduled during each month.  These help members stay informed and engaged, and at the same time, allow a social venue for members who share common interests to engage with each other.

Speakers

Members enjoy weekly lunches featuring guest speakers. Topics range from world events to regional issues to the arts and history. Recent speakers include Tom Hall,
Barbara Mikulski, Sherri Parks, and Rebecca Hoffberger.

Games (such as Bridge, Mah Jongg and Pinochle)

Bridge is enjoyed on the last Friday of each month. Mah Jongg and Pinochle are played on the first and third Friday of each month. All members are welcome to join.

Trips

Well planned day trips to exciting venues are offered several times a year. Members and their guests visit museums, gardens and even take in a show on Broadway.

In addition, the club also serves as a venue for members who have more focused interests in topics and/or activities that they wish to pursue with others who share those interests. Based on interests to date, HSC offers the following activities:

– Three Language Tables (French, Italian, and Spanish) – Members get to socialize with others who share their interest in a particular language as they practice speaking, listening, sometimes reading, and/or otherwise just improving their language skills.

Game Day groups (Bridge, Coaching for newer Bridge players, Pinochle, Mah Jongg, and Mah Jongg for newer players) – Members of all skill levels get to sharpen their game-playing skills as they face the challenging interplay of luck and skill, making the experience unpredictable and engaging. At the same time, they get to enjoy being with others who share their passion.

Current Events – 2024 looks to be a consequential year. We’ll all be talking about it – and this is a great place to begin. HSC friends join in wide-ranging and civil discussions on a wide variety of the issues of the day. Members can bring brief articles to inform the discussion, or share a short overview analyzing an issue to spark interesting discussion. Activity groups meet on different schedules, but generally, at least monthly and more frequently based on member and space availability.
